Ruma Pipi
This room is a shared space for infants and toddlers, with a primary focus on tamariki under the age of two. While older tamariki may also spend time in the room, we maintain a 1:4 teacher-to-child ratio for our youngest learners. Staffing is adjusted as needed to reflect the ages, numbers, and needs of the tamariki present.
Rūma Pipi provides a safe and nurturing base for our youngest tamariki. While they have their own dedicated space, children are encouraged to explore the wider environment when they are ready, engaging with older tamariki and accessing a range of learning experiences across our preschool. We value a flexible approach that responds to each child's individual development, confidence, and interests, supporting a natural progression into the wider learning community.

Ruma Paua
Toddlers and young tamariki share this room, which serves as our larger learning space for children aged two years and over. We maintain staffing in accordance with Ministry of Education licensing requirements, with ratios adjusted as needed to support the ages, numbers, and individual needs of the tamariki present.
With up to 26 tamariki, this space offers a more structured daily rhythm while still providing opportunities for child-led learning, exploration, and play. As children grow in confidence and capability, they are encouraged to explore different learning environments throughout our preschool. Younger toddlers may also spend time in this space alongside older tamariki, with staffing adjusted as needed to ensure all children receive adequate support.
We recognise that every child is unique, and we work closely with whānau to ensure each tamaiti feels safe, supported, and settled within their learning environment.

Our Environment
At Kōhungahunga o Te Hoiere, we recognise that all tamariki learn and develop at their own pace. Our environment is designed to provide a balance of security, exploration, and challenge, supporting children as they grow in confidence and capability.
Rūma Pipi and Rūma Paua each have their own dedicated indoor and fully fenced outdoor spaces, while also providing opportunities for tamariki to connect and learn across our wider preschool environment. We work alongside whānau during enrolment and settling to ensure each child is supported in a way that reflects their individual strengths, interests and stage of development.
