Te Rapunga Whakaaro -
Our Philosophy
Ko ngā tamariki te pūtake o ā mātou mahi.
At the heart of everything we do are the children and whānau we serve.
At Pelorus Community Preschool Kōhungahunga o Te Hoiere, we believe all tamariki are taonga. We support each child to grow in confidence, develop a strong sense of identity, and feel secure within a caring and inclusive environment.
Our unique location in Te Hoiere shapes our learning. Through exploration of the awa, ngahere, and whenua, tamariki develop curiosity, a connection to Papatūānuku, and an understanding of their role as kaitiaki.
Guided by manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, we foster respectful relationships and a strong sense of belonging. Through play, exploration, and nurturing connections, we create a learning community where tamariki and whānau grow together.

Our History

Back in 2004, Havelock had no preschool. Like parents today, local families needed a place where their children could have a great start in life, where they could build connections with other families, and where parents had the flexibility to work or take time for themselves.
What followed was four years of dedicated planning, consultation, networking, fundraising, and countless volunteer hours. Through the collective efforts of the community, a purpose-built preschool became a reality.
Pelorus Community Preschool opened its doors at the end of January 2008. It was truly a community achievement, created by local people to meet the needs of local families.
Today, it remains an important part of the community, supported by the whānau of tamariki who attend and by the wider community that helped bring it to life. It continues its proud tradition of supporting local children and families, standing as a testament to what can be achieved when a community works together toward a common goal.

Our Committee
Kōhungahunga o Te Hoiere is a not-for-profit incorporated society, which means that all proceeds are returned directly to our preschool to benefit our awesome tamariki. We are governed by an elected committee that includes parents, whānau, and community members. Our committee sets our strategic plan and vision, then ensures we are meeting these within our daily routines and practises.
