Infants

Our infants are focused on exploring the world around them. We place our focus on supporting and encouraging them as they move around and let them lead their learning and physical development.

Toddlers

Our Toddlers are rapidly developing their physical, social, cognitive and language capabilities. We focus on following tamariki interests - making their learning meaningful and fun!

Young Children

We place high importance on tamariki becoming confident and competent in who they are. They are learning to take responsibility for themselves as they plan and monitor their own activities. They are developing a greater awareness of themselves as learners.

Our Environment

At Kōhungahunga o Te Hoiere, we recognise that all tamariki learn and develop at their own pace. Our environment is designed to provide a balance of security, exploration, and challenge, supporting children as they grow in confidence and capability.

Our preschool offers two dedicated learning spaces: Rūma Pipi, which provides a nurturing environment for infants and younger toddlers, and Rūma Paua, a larger space for older toddlers and young tamariki. Both rooms have their own fully fenced outdoor play areas, so tamariki have opportunities to engage in meaningful learning experiences that reflect their individual interests and developmental stage.

We take a flexible approach to learning and care, encouraging tamariki to explore the wider preschool environment when appropriate. We work closely with whānau throughout the enrolment and settling process to ensure each child feels secure, supported, and engaged in an environment that meets their needs.

Our Kaupapa
Our Approach

Our kaupapa is based on the RIE approach to teaching. The foundation of our practises, philosophy and its principles is Respect. We believe that communication is the key to building relationships based on mutual respect and understanding -  so getting to know you and your child is our key priority.

We recognise that every taimaiti learns and develops in their own way and at their own pace. By taking the time to understand each child as an individual, we follow their interests, respond to their cues, and work in partnership with whānau to support their learning, wellbeing, and growth.
